Hawaii Island police are stepping up enforcement of distracted driving laws this month as part of the “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” national campaign.
State law prohibits the use of cellphones and other mobile electronic devices while operating a vehicle, with certain exceptions, specifically prohibiting activities such as texting, instant messaging, gaming and emailing, that take a driver’s eyes and mind off the road and hands off the wheel.
Violators face a $297 fine or $307 if the violation is within a school or construction zone.
